Whenever we say BRUSH TEETH, the first thing come into our mind is TOOTHPASTE!!!
People brush their teeth with toothbrush and toothpaste on it everyday...Normally people brush their teeth twice a day or even more than that but they don't even know what are the chemical ingredients in their toothpaste and its effects!
Let's find out what are the chemicals that we applied on our teeth everyday...
First of all, binders which holds the ingredients together such as sodium alginate, karaya gum and bentonite. They also affect the speed and volume of foam production, the rate of flavor release and product dispersal, the appearance of the toothpaste ribbon on the toothbrush, and the rinsibility from the toothbrush.
Second is the abrasives which helps to increase the opacity of paste and also helps to get rid of plaque by scrubbing the teeth. Examples of abrasives are calcium carbonate (also known as chalk) and sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda).
A foam based compound which helps to remove particles from teeth which is known as sudser. When the surface tensions of water are low, the bubbles will formed to make foam. Commonly used sudser such as sodium lauryl sulphate is usually a combination of an organic alcohol or a fatty acid with an alkali metal.
Humectants keep water to maintain the paste in toothpaste and also retain the solid and liquid phases of toothpaste together. Humectants such as propylene glyco, glycerin and sorbitol give coolness and sweetness to the toothpaste.
In addition, a flavoring such as mint is most commonly used ingredients of toothpaste due to its freshness. Besides, mint flavors which contain oils can volatile the mouth's warm environment.
Fluorides which help to reduce decay and increasing the strength of teeth are one of the important ingredients of toothpaste. Examples of fluorides are sodium fluoride and sodium perborate (whitening ingredient).
Others ingredients are water which gives dilution to toothpaste and anti-bacterial agent which help to prevent gum disease.
No doubt, the chemical ingredients in toothpaste possessed benefits but there are still consists of negative side which we should be aware.
The harsh abrasives such as prophylene-glyco is a active component in a solvent in anti-freezes. It also used in everything from makeup to mouthwash. It might causes damage to the tooth enamel.
Fluoride which is considered toxic when ingested in high levels. This is always happens to the children. Studies showed that health problems such as fever, abdominal pain and urinary tract infection may occur.
Hence, it is important to choose the right kind of toothpaste for our and also the children.
